On November 2, 2021, The Rolling Stones brought the house down at Cotton Bowl in Fair Park in Dallas, Texas. It’s the fifth time the band played at this iconic venue – the first time was in 1975. There was a drizzle but even that couldn’t stop fans from flocking to the arena and enjoying a night with the rock legends.
They powered through an 18-song set full of their greatest hits. For over two hours, the Rolling Stones showed everyone they still had it especially frontman Mick Jagger. Performing in front of more than 45,000 concert-goers, Jagger was every inch the energetic and charismatic frontman even at 78 years old.
For the video below, they played “Start Me Up”, featured on their 1981 album Tattoo You. It actually developed from a reggae-rock number titled “Never Stop”. But after dozens of takes, it was abandoned.
“It was one of those things we cut a lot of times; one of those cuts that you can play forever and ever in the studio,” guitarist Keith Richards recalled. “Twenty minutes go by and you’re still locked into those two chords … Sometimes you become conscious of the fact that, ‘Oh, it’s “Brown Sugar” again,’ so you begin to explore other rhythmic possibilities.”
“It’s basically trial and error,” he continued. “As I said, that one was pretty locked into a reggae rhythm for quite a few weeks. We were cutting it for Emotional Rescue, but it was nowhere near coming through, and we put it aside and almost forgot about it.”
