Poignant and Powerful
Miley Cyrus performed the Pink Floyd classic hit “Wish You Were Here” during a recent appearance on Saturday Night Live. This isn’t the pop icon’s first foray into rock territory (she has previously covered songs from Led Zeppelin, Metallica, Paul Simon, and Christ Cornell) but her haunting rendition of WYWH is truly something else. As you can see on the clip below, she took the darker route for her at-home performance and delivered it in a campfire setting complete with an open fire pit.
Cyrus was accompanied by musician and producer Andrew Watt who only recently recovered from COVID-19. The music and the whole vibe serve as a reflection of the current global crisis especially with cities on lockdown and the implementation of social distancing and self-quarantining.
The track seemingly takes on a new meaning amid the coronavirus outbreak. Cyrus’ version is truly poignant and powerful.
“Wish You Were Here” is the title track to Pink Floyd’s 1975 album. It’s inspired by their former frontman and leader Syd Barrett who was dismissed from the band because of his drug abuse and mental health issues. Both Roger Waters and David Gilmour agreed that it’s definitely one of the band’s finest works.
