And Now My Life Has Changed In So Many Ways!
“Help!” was written by John Lennon but credit went to Lennon-McCartney and was recorded by The Beatles on April 13, 1965 in London. It was released on July 19, 1965 in the US and July 23, 1965 in the UK. It was also the theme song for their feature film and the title track for their fifth studio album.
- Number 1 on the US Billboard Hot 100
- Number 1 on the UK singles (The Official Charts Company)
During an interview with Playboy in 1980, Lennon recounted: “The whole Beatles thing was just beyond comprehension. I was subconsciously crying out for help”.
Although this was one of Lennon’s favorite Beatles songs, he admitted during one interview that he wished it could’ve been done with a slower tempo. The band recorded in a total of 12 takes, nine of which were mostly focused on the instrumental backing.
Writer Ian MacDonald describes the song as the “first crack in the protective shell” Lennon had built around his emotions during the Beatles’ rise to fame, and an important milestone in his songwriting style.
Check out this great live version. I’m totally loving it!
