What A Beautifully-Written Melodic Song!
Also known as “Coming to America” or “They’re Coming to America,” this song is basically a tribute to immigration especially since the USA is where people all from all parts of the world go to seek better opportunities. Also, Neil Diamond’s family were immigrants. On his father’s side, they came from Poland while on his mother’s side, they were from Russia. This was written by Neil for his movie, “The Jazz Singer.”
- Peaked at 8th on the Billboard Hot 100
- Neil’s 6th number 1 on the Adult Contemporary chart
- Ranked 62nd on the 1981 Pop Single Overall
The song’s theme is a positive interpretation of the history of immigration to the United States, both during the early 1900s and today. Combining Diamond’s typically powerful melody, dynamic arrangement, and bombastic vocal, it ends with an interpolation of the traditional patriotic song “My Country, ‘Tis of Thee”.
This patriotic song was released in 1980 as part of the soundtrack of the aforementioned movie. It’s often included in his concert repertoire and has been used several times from a presidential campaign to the Olympics promotion.
You just can’t help but love Neil’s compositions. He’s one brilliant songwriter!
