This was originally entitled “Deep Elm Blues” which is an American traditional song. The title refers to a neighborhood in Dallas, Texas which was called “Deep Ellum.” It was home to several iconic musicians including Blind Willie Johnson, Bill Neely, Blind Lemon Jefferson and Lead Belly.

The first known recording was made by the Cofer Brothers under the name of The Georgia Black Bottom on OKeh Records.

With several versions recorded, the title eventually became “Deep Elem Blues.” This became a staple in their repertoire and it’s amazing that the band helped popularized this type of roots music. And in this particular video, they played an acoustic version. How’s that for an unforgettable performance?
