Rest In Peace
Rush Frontman Geddy Lee’s Mother has passed away at the age of 95 – only a few weeks before her 96th birthday. Mary Weinrib, a Holocaust survivor, was a huge supporter of Lee’s career in music even from the very beginning.
Born in 1925, Mary was born and grew up in Warsaw, Poland. As a young adult, she was forced into concentration camps, Starachowice, Auschwitz and Bergen-Belsen. After her liberation in 1945, she married Morris Weinrib whom she met and fell in love with at Auschwitz. They moved to Canada but Morris suddenly died in 1965, leaving Mary with three kids to raise.
In the early days of Rush, she was always at their concerts supporting her son.
According to her obituary, “When the first Rush album was released, Mary plastered the windows of her store with Rush posters and gave albums away to any kids who wanted them but didn’t have the money to buy them.”
Mary and Geddy were featured in an episode of From Cradle to Stage hosted by Dave Grohl and his mother Virginia.
“From a very early age, I knew that my parents were Holocaust survivors,” Geddy said. “In fact, I knew that almost all my family were Holocaust survivors. Most survivors don’t discuss it, but I felt lucky in a way because it wasn’t a mystery in my house.”
