I Take My Love, Take It Down!

“Landslide” was written by Stevie Nicks for Fleetwood Mac’s self-titled tenth album. Since Nicks joined the band, this became her first original contribution. She penned this song in Aspen, Colorado as she was visiting someone and sitting in the living room. She was surrounded by the mountains when she realized: “Wow, all this snow could just come tumbling down around me and there is nothing I can do about it.”

Nicks has said that she wrote this song while she was contemplating going back to school or continuing on professionally with guitarist Lindsey Buckingham.

This was also inspired by Nicks’ father who asked her if she might want to go back to school. He told her to give her singing career six more months at which point, Mick Fleetwood contacted her after three months. The song eventually became one of the band’s most enduring tracks.

Reflecting on this song in 2014, Nicks told the New York Times: “I wrote ‘Landslide’ in 1973, when I was 27, and I did already feel old in a lot of ways. I’d been working as a waitress and a cleaning lady for years. I was tired.”
