“This Is For You, Wherever You Are.”
As daunting as it must be for rock fans to reconcile the deaths of so many legends this year, it’s worth remembering that as much as we miss them, they’re missed by friends and colleagues with whom they shared the road, a stage, an album credit. One of the biggest losses suffered this year was that of musical visionary Prince, who died April 21st at the age of 57; as tributes poured in, there was one tribute in particular from the normally taciturn Stevie Nicks of Fleetwood Mac that made us especially sad, with the 68-year-old singer taking to social media to call the late legend her “dove”. Later that day, footage surfaced of an older Fleetwood Mac performance featuring Stevie talking about her friendship with Prince, lamenting that she didn’t get to see him nearly as often as either would have liked but that despite it all, she was going to dedicate “Landslide” to him anyway.

Where many of us struggled to find the words to express our sorrow at navigating a world without Prince in the hours and days following his death, Stevie knew exactly what she wanted to say and was ready – or as ready as any of us can ever be, really – with words that have brought comfort and clarity to so many over the years. When she performed this with Fleetwood Mac months before Prince’s death it was a mere nod to a friend she missed seeing regularly; now, it’s a heartfelt goodbye to a friend and the era of creativity and beauty he ushered in.
