“Don’t Bring Me Down” was written and produced by Jeff Lynne. It was released on July 21, 1979 for Electric Light Orchestra’s eighth studio album “Discovery.” The slamming door sound at the end of the song is basically the metal fire door at the studios where they recorded the track. This chart-topping hit was penned in dedication to the NASA Skylab space station.
It’s a great big galloping ball of distortion. I wrote it at the last minute, ‘cos I felt there weren’t enough loud ones on the album. This was just what I was after.

- Number 4 in the Billboard Hot 100
- Number 1 in the Canadian Charts
The cover versions ranged from punk rock to symphonic metal and has been performed several times by other music artists. Jeff Lynne also re-recorded the track right in his home studio. It was then included in a compilation album under the band’s name.
It was certified silver in the UK and gold in the US and has appeared in numerous films including “Planes”.
