Buyer Of David Gilmour’s Guitar Revealed

Last June 20, David Gilmour’s guitar auction at Christie’s broke world records with a staggering $21.49 M in sales for the benefit of his charitable foundation ClientEarth. Most of the winning bids exceeded estimates by a long shot. While there were several others, the most famous guitar is perhaps the 1969 Black Fender Stratocaster (the one he used during the recording of “Comfortably Numb”, “Money”, and “Shine On You Crazy Diamond”) which was estimated to fetch at $150,000 but sold off at $3,975,000.

And now, the identity of the highest bidder has just been revealed. According to the Rolling Stone magazine, it’s billionaire Jim Irsay – Pink Floyd superfan and the owner of NFL’s Indianapolis Colts.

“I just fu**ing love Pink Floyd, man, I cannot deny it. I think [Roger] Waters’ lyrics and Gilmour’s playing and their whole story and prominence is just so profound that I cannot say enough about my excitement for this. … David Gilmour stands by himself.”

He didn’t just purchase one item from the auction though. He also bought a Pink Floyd flight case for the Black Strat at $175,000 and the 1969 Martin D-35 acoustic which was used to record “Wish You Were Here”. He also added:

“If I don’t get the guitar, I’ll look like a jackass. But I love Strats, and this is the Strat. This is the one that was the signature guitar for those incredible Floyd leads.”

So in that one night, Irsay dropped over $5M for Gilmour’s items.
