B.B. King – “I Believe To My Soul” Live

From One Blues Legend To Another

Originally a classic from the Rhythm and Blues Legend Ray Charles, B.B. King covers “I Believe To My Soul” during his live performance in Africa in 1974. It was written by Ray Charles himself and included in his album, “The Genius Sings the Blues.” It was released on October 1961 under Atlantic Records. This was a compilation of his most memorable and loved tracks. Billy Taylor, a jazz composer, spoke about Charles’ music:

He had a very personal sound and there was something different about his rhythmic approach. In his handling of melody he seemed to be using devices similar to those used by Dinah Washington and a small group of popular singers who allowed their gospel singing backgrounds to influence their interpretation of popular songs… I was intrigued by the emotional quality projected by both his piano playing and his unusual voice and was not surprised when Ahmet Ertegün said that he wanted to let the young musician record some of his own material. “He communicates just like the old blues singers”, Ahmet said.

The album earned several praises and positive reviews and was highly recommended by critics. It showcased his growth as an artist and his ability to mold several elements into his unique and distinctive style.
